Whale Carcass

St. Lawrence Island, Gambell, Whale Carcass

I understand that they catch a couple of whales a year on average, and almost all of the whale is used.  In this unfortunate case, they had carved up most of the whale after catching it late in the summer, but the freeze started early, and they were not able to use up the whole thing. Although it was frozen over the winter, by the time it thawed, it was so picked at and soiled by birds that it was no longer good for human use.
