Ice Falls

Juneau, Mendenhall Glacier, Ice Falls
A glacier is basically a frozen river. It continues to flow with gravity, but since it is frozen it does so at extremely slow motion. Like a regular river, when the surface is relatively flat without much elevation change, the glacier may be smooth with few crevasses (splits in the ice). When there is a steep drop, it forms an ice fall, which causes some breakup of the surface of the glacier. This ice fall is part of the Mendenhall Glacier, viewed from the West Glacier Trail.
