Dalton Highway
The Dalton Highway, also known locally as the Haul Road, is a 414 mile mostly gravel road that connects the interior with the Brooks Range, North Slope and Arctic Ocean. The road is used mostly by trucks servicing the oil companies associated with the pipeline. There are very few services on the road. There are only three places to get fuel or food prior to the end of the road at Deadhorse, and there are no medical facilities the entire way. If you make it to the end of the road, you still can't get to the Arctic Ocean unless you make arrangements for a tour in advance, as the area is restricted by the oil companies. I was only able to go about three fourths of the way, and the weather was cloudy and rainy most of the way, but I found it a beautiful and fascinating road, and would like to do it again.
