This beautiful dog is part of a dog sled team. Dog sleds were an important part of Alaska's transportation history, being the only real way of getting around in the days before planes and snowmobiles. They can still be quite practical today. I used to think that it was not really fair to the dogs, but watching these dogs as they are selected to be a part of the team has changed my mind on that. They truly seem to love it and get very depressed and whine if they are not selected to go.
