Million Dollar Bridge

Cordova, Million Dollar Bridge

This bridge was built in 1910 at a cost of over a million dollars.  It was an extreme challenge to build, as it crosses the Copper River, and lies between two large glaciers, the Childs Glacier and the Miles Glacier.  At the time it was built, the Miles Glacier was two miles closer than it is now, and the bridge had to be built in the winter to avoid the risks of glacier calving during its construction.  During the earthquake of 1964, part of the bridge slipped off its abutment.   It is my understanding that the bridge was finally repaired in the spring of 2005.
