Spider Web

Poring Hot Springs

This spider web is at the Poring Hot Springs, at the base of Mt. Kinabalu.  It is several feet in diameter. The insects in Borneo all seem to be many times larger than anywhere else, though they don't seem to be pests.  Rarely are they ones that bite or sting, but they can look very threatening.  Even the famed leeches, which do bite, inject a small anesthetic and anticoagulant into the host (similar to taking a baby aspirin) , so nothing is felt, and the bite is usually detected by finding a small trickle of blood from the site.  I will take a Bornean leech bite over a mosquito bite any day.
