Turtle Islands
Turtle Islands
Three small islands north of Sandakan make up the Turtle Islands Park, and are set aside to protect the sea turtles' nesting grounds. These endangered turtles do not start to breed until they are about 20-25 years old, and come ashore at night to dig a hole and deposit their eggs. The eggs later hatch and the hatchlings race to the water against all sorts of predators including birds and introduced species such as rats.
