Longhouse

Sarawak, Longhouse

Longhouses are communal living arrangements, with a long building divided in two lengthwise.  One side is made up of small rooms that individual families live in, and the other side is communal space.  Generally, if there are visitors, they sleep on mats on the floor of the communal side.  There is often a porch such as this one that extends beyond the communal portion.  Animals live all around and even in these longhouses as well.
