Leafeater Ant Mound

Corcovado National Park

Leafeater ants are a fascinating insect species.  They are well organized, dedicated ants, that are one of the few species that actually does a farming type behaviour.  The worker ants go out and cut pieces of leaves and bring them back to the colony.  The leaves are stored in little rooms where they then grow a fungus, and the ants harvest the fungus for food.  As you can see above, the mounds can be huge.
