Siena, Piazza del Campo
The Campo (as seen here from the Palazzo Pubblico tower) is the main square for Siena. It is divided into nine sections to represent each part of town. Twice each summer the Palio della Contrade, a bareback horse race, is held around the perimeter of this square, with the spectators filling the campo to watch and bet on the outcome. I have not been to this race, but I heard rumor that at least in the past, the horses would even receive communion prior to the race.
