A Bomb Dome

A Bomb Dome, Hiroshima, Japan

The building across the river is now called the A Bomb Dome, one of the few structures to remain standing in the area where the bomb detonated.  Most of the structures were wooden and burned from the heat blast of the explosion.  Many of those buildings were actually being demolished at the time the bomb hit in an attempt to decrease fire potential from the American air raids.  The plaque in the foreground shows what the building looked like prior to the bomb.
