A Bomb Dome Close Up

A Bomb Dome, Hiroshima, Japan

It is very tragic to think of the deaths and injury and illness that were all caused by this one bomb (a very small atomic bomb by today's standards).  The bomb, which was dropped on August 6, 1945, at 8:15am, killed about 80,000 people immediately, and about twice that many people eventually died from radiation and other related conditions.  I can't help but think though, of how many more Japanese people would have died had the war continued on and on using conventional air raids and carpet bombing in a country that to this point refused to surrender and swore to fight to the last man.  Then to think of all the others from the other countries who would have died had the war continued and especially all those from around the world who did die during the war all for the greed of a few people.

Note the heron and egret resting on the dome structure.
