Itsukushima Shrine and Pagoda
Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima, Japan
The shine is built on a pier-type structure because originally the island was considered sacred and commoners could not set foot on the island. They would approach by boat and enter through the torii gate and get off at the shrine. The Pagoda is not part of the shrine.
