Glow Worms

Kaitaia, New Zealand

Glow worms are fascinating insects found predominantly in New Zealand that glow a bluish colour in the dark.  They are mostly found in caves and overhanging cliffs.  They produce the light to attract other insects for food.  There are many caves that cater to tourists to see the glow worms, but some are rather tacky touristy, and most do not allow any photography, even without flash and tripod (in part to protect the creatures from inconsiderate flash users, but mostly to sell their pictures and books in the obligatory gift shop).  I did get special permission from the Millennium Glow  Worm Cave south of Kaitaia.  These glow worms are very difficult to photograph, since they are so dim it is impossible to focus.  But the sight of them creating a bluish constellation in the sky is fantastic.
