Lanse aux Meadows is believed to be the site of Leif Erickson's original settlement in the New World. A thousand years ago when it was settled, it was called Vinland, long thought to be because of wild grapes, which have never grown here, but 'vin' also meant grass or pasture in old Norwegian, a description very apt for this location.
