Seacoast

New Hampshire has the smallest seacoast of any state in the nation.  The eighteen mile coastline is primarily beaches and rocks except for Portsmouth Harbor, which is a busy commercial and military seaport.  This is the oldest part of New Hampshire, and both Portsmouth and Dover were settled in 1623, making them among the oldest English permanent settlements in the United States. For space reasons, some inland towns that are normally considered part of the seacoast area will be discussed in the South Central section of this site.
