Gaillard Cut

Panama Canal, Gaillard Cut

The Gaillard Cut was the hardest part of the canal to build, and took the most lives.  A cut had to be made through the continental divide to connect the two oceans.  The locks on both ends of the canal bring ships to the level of Gatun Lake, but still have to go through this narrow gap to get to the other side.
