GUM Department Store
Moscow, GUM Department Store
The GUM Department store was the largest store, or mall in all of the Soviet Union. I don't know if it is still even being used as such today. Communist countries had a different way of handling business in stores. Shelves tended to be fairly empty by Western standards, and the customer would have to ask an employee to show him or her an item, then go to another line to pay for it, and get a receipt. Then they would take the receipt to another employee who would finally get the item. It created jobs, but I don't think that system is being used there anymore.
