Siberian Inuit Infant

Yanrakynnot, Siberia, Russia

I was working on Cruise West's Spirit of Oceanus on their first Bering Sea cruise when we visited the Siberian village of Yanrakynnot.  We barely made it as the harbor was still mostly frozen, but were able to manage a route for the Zodiacs to get ashore and visit the village.  The people, though poor,  were friendly and eager to show off their village. Most were dressed in what I suspect was their 'Sunday finest'. We were among the very first westerners I believe most of them have ever seen.   Many didn't really seem to have a concept of what having their picture taken was all about. It was especially interesting to visit the town again, just a few days later on the southbound voyage, and present the pictures to the people in them.  More pictures from Yanrakynnot can be seen on the Siberia page.
