SOUTH PACIFIC

Oceania, or what is popularly known as the South Pacific Islands, is surprisingly diverse in its topography and culture.  The islands range from very flat atolls to steep and rugged volcanoes.   Some are elite resorts, and some still have villages with straw huts and people wearing grass skirts and going topless. Many still have cultures and religious influences that go well before the white missionaries came to convert them.  I visited this area for a couple of months during January and February 2006, while working on Cruise West's Spirit of Oceanus, a small cruise ship that sails in a lot of waters 'off the beaten current', so to speak. There are 35 islands represented on this site.  I was very surprised by their diversity.
