Mission Espada

Founded in 1690, Mission Espada was the first mission in Texas. These missions were designed to resemble Spanish villages and culture, and the goal was to make the native Americans into good Spanish citizens. (Remember that it was another 140 some years before Texas got its independence and after that joined the US.)
