Gibraltar
The Rock. That hotly contested huge monolith at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. Britain was given Gibraltar "in perpetuity" at the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Spain, its only neighbor, has wanted it back ever since. Today, it is less a fortress than a tourist spot.
