Dunnotar Castle

Dunnotar Castle
This high promontory surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs and ocean, was an early religious site. The builder of the castle in the fourteenth century was excommunicated for building on the sacred ground. After a couple of rebellions in the area centuries later, approximately 170 prisoners were kept in the castle for two months. Only a few survived, and those were shipped to the American colonies.
