Grand Staircase Escalante
National Monument
The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument is a huge expanse of some of the most remote land in America's lower 48. It is full of very diverse and seldom visited attractions. This park was approved by the Clinton administration, in part to protect it from mining interests, though the current administration has talked about opening it back up to mining and other commercial interests. The name of the Grand Staircase refers to the effect of the different layers of colored rocks that make up the various steps of the region. This aspect can be well seen when flying over the area in a commercial aircraft.
