US Capitol

The United States Capitol is the home of the Legislative Branch of the government. The cornerstone was laid in 1793, and the building was burned by the British in the war of 1812.  The current dome was not finished until the civil war.  President Lincoln had construction continue during the war as an enduring symbol of the Union. It is the most prominent building in Washington, located in the exact center of town, and all other nearby buildings are not supposed to exceed it in height.  In fact, the other states in the country, in respect to the nation's capitol, have informally agreed to keep their state capitol buildings lower in height than the top of the US capitol dome.  That is, of course, except for one state, and I am sure I don't have to tell you which one. (you can e-mail me if you can't guess)
