Lincoln Memorial

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and today looked upon as the most popular, though he certainly was not seen that way in his time, being caught in the throes of the Civil War.  He is now also remembered for abolishing slavery in the United States, but it is interesting to note that the keynote speaker at the dedication of the memorial in 1922 had to watch the proceedings from a roped off area because he was black.  The memorial has since been the focus of numerous civil rights rallies.
