Lincoln Memorial
The 36 columns that surround the building represent each of the states that were part of the Union at the time of Lincoln's death, and at the top are listed each of the 48 states that existed at the time the memorial was built. The memorial is featured on the US penny and the five dollar bill. If you look closely, you an see the names of the various states near the top of the monument on the five dollar bill.
