Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian Institution is a collection of sixteen museums, eight of which are on the Mall, which was endowed by James Smithson, an Englishman who never even visited the United States.  It took the United States many years to decide what to do with the money, and ultimately the Smithsonian Institution has grown to a huge museum and research center.
