White House

The White House is America's version of a royal palace.  It serves as the headquarters of the Executive Branch of government and it has been the home and office of all the United States presidents since John Adams, the second president.  The building was burned in the War of 1812, and painted white afterwards to conceal smoke damage.  The first indoor bathroom was not put in until 1833.  People could walk the lawns and even picnic on the grounds until as recently as the 1920s.  Most presidents have made some sort of alteration to the building.
